Hey, Brendan Jones here from H91 Drum School in Galway City, providing both online and private drum coaching. Today’s Blog ill be giving a taster of the Cajon Lessons im now offering online and in person. In 2009 I studied Latin Percussion with Bosco De Oliveira in Drum Tech College London. Learning the different percussion instruments, techniques and style of Latin America.

This beautiful south american percussion instrument is a great way to learn the traditional style of Peruvian music or to learn more contemporary styles like Funk, Pop, Rock, Jazz and is used a lot for Irish Traditional Music.

The Cajon is not expensive, the entry point to the instrument can be as low as €50 - €80 so it’s great for people who are thinking of getting into drumming and learning more about rhythm and the history of drumming. Also, learning the Cajon will improve manual dexterity giving the hands of the student more control over skillful day to day tasks and improve their range of motion. This can help students with Dyspraxia.

The Beginners Cajon Lesson you see below will take you through how to construct a beat step by step, as well as a brief description of the correct technique in order to achieve the authentic sounds. The Accompanying Sight Reading will help the student gain a deeper understanding of the video. Just remember the following………………

B = Bass Tone

T = Tap

S= Slap

Below you will See the Sight Reading for the first beat. Remember to KEEP IT SLOW at the beginning, make sure you get the right sounds for the instrument and then it will sound a lot better when you speed it up. Think in the 16th note pattern and use the 5th limb as described in the video.

Below you will see the second variation. It’s the exact same, however we are replacing the TAP on the + of the 2nd and 4th group 16th notes with a BASS TONE.
